Wigan wakes to snow

Wigan households have woken to the first coverings of snow of the season.

Forecasters say that a cold and wintry spell will now stay with the borough - and country as a whole- for the remainder of the year.

And they were warning of treacherous conditions featuring both snow and ice even though Wigan Council gritters were taking to the borough's streets on Sunday night.

The following hours into Monday brought several inches of the white stuff which is the tail end of Storm Bella now hit by lower temperatures.

The Met Office issued a yellow weather warning over night although the likelihood of further precipitation during daylight hours appeared to be minimal.

However, temperatures are not expected to go beyond three degrees all day, with a similar picture continuing through to Sunday, albeit without further snowfall.
