THE investigation into the outbreak of a fire that devastated the Wharfside apartment block at Wigan Pier a week ago still has a way to go.

Firefighters formally handed the building over to contractors earlier in the week as demolition work began and Wigan Council continued to liaise with residents.

A council spokesperson said: “We are still working with those who have not yet found alternative housing although we have found permanent housing solutions for almost all of those affected with a very small number still requiring help.

“The helpline (01942 489014) will still be in operation and there will be support for those who need help at Wigan Life Centre on Saturday from 9am to noon.

“We are also liaising with community supports who have been collecting donations and gifts to draw up how they can be best used for those affected.”
