A crew from Atherton fire station were called to the skate park on Hamilton Street in Atherton at around 8.30pm last night, Sunday, after the wheelie bin was dragged from the road and set alight.

Watch manager Dave Holden said: “Somebody had taken a wheelie bin as far away from the main road as they could and set it on fire.

“These types of fires can be extremely dangerous because the plastic melts and they can become a running fire. The oxygen and the hydrogen separates and creates a ball of fire.

“The only way to tackle them is with a great deal of water. All wheelie bins are made of a similar type of plastic.”
