Mr Whelan will become Life President and an application to erect a statue has been lodged with Wigan Council.

Chairman and Mr Whelan’s grandson, David Sharpe, said: “My grandfather transformed the club forever and I know that every Wigan Athletic supporter appreciates the things he has done for us and will support both of these ideas.
“What my grandfather achieved at Wigan Athletic is beyond the dreams of anyone connected with the club and I feel it is fitting to honour those achievements, firstly with the title of Life President and secondly with a statue which we are planning to erect outside the main entrance of the DW Stadium.”
The club said the plans would be a “fitting tribute to the man who presided over the transformation of the club during his incredible 20 year tenure as chairman.”
Plans for the statue are now in the hands of the council with Latics hoping to start work on the project if and when approval is granted.
Mr Whelan stepped down as chairman of the club in March, handing over the reins to Mr Sharpe, 23.
