Wigan beauty queen has the chop for charity

But Wiganers who spot her at events across the borough from now on will notice a change in her appearance.

For the seven-year-old had her long, flowing locks chopped in a bid to help poorly children.

Nevaeh had nine inches of her hair cut off at Jo And Co hair salon, in Pemberton, on Saturday.

Hair stylist Lauren Woodcock measured the length of Nevaeh’s hair and the amount to be cut before snipping away.

Nevaeh, a pupil at St John’s Primary School in Pemberton, had very long hair and decided to have it cut to help youngsters who are ill.

It will now be sent to charity Little Princess Trust, who will use her hair to make a wig for children who have lost their own hair due to treatment for cancer or other illnesses.

A stranger who visited the salon the previous day had also left their hair to be donated.

Last month, her mother Andrea Johnson, from Norley, said she was very proud of Nevaeh.

She told the Post: “It was something I mentioned last year. She was having her hair cut and had five inches off then. At the time my hairdresser said she could have donated eight inches, but she thought she might be a bit young.

“I mentioned it to her again and she decided to do it.”

Having a wig made from real hair can make a huge difference for children who are undergoing treatment for a serious illness such as cancer.

Last year the charity distributed more than 1,000 free wigs to children, as well as funding research into causes and cures for paediatric cancer and research focusing on less toxic treatments.

After going under the scissors, Nevaeh was delighted with her new hair style and showed it off on Sunday at the Under The Sea charity pageant.

As well as donating her hair, she raised more than £450 through sponsorship for Little Princess Trust to help pay for more wigs.

Sometimes the charity has to buy a wig if a suitable one made from donated hair is not available, but it can cost between £350 and £500.

Caring Nevaeh is no stranger to supporting good causes, as she has raised money for Wigan And Leigh Hospice and UK Sepsis since being crowned as Junior Miss Wigan in May.
