Wigan drivers dicing with death on one-way road

Reckless motorists are endangering lives by driving in the wrong direction down a Wigan one-way street.

A fed-up resident of Corporation Street, Poolstock, said cars are regularly ignoring no entry signs at the road’s junction with Poolstock Lane.

Richard Horton said the problems are worst during the evening rush hour, as drivers use a potentially-lethal short cut to get onto a housing estate and out of the long queues building up on Poolstock.

He voiced concerns that people so brazenly flouting the law could eventually cause a serious accident.

He said: “It is an absolute nightmare. At peak times people just won’t sit in the traffic on Poolstock Lane and are using the one-way stretch as a rat run.

“If you were here in the early evening you could see a dozen cars going the wrong way down the street in 10 minutes. If drivers realise you are watching them and acknowledge what they are doing they stick their fingers up at you. It’s dangerous and it’s going to take an accident before somebody even looks at it.”

Mark Tilley, Wigan Council’s assistant director for infrastructure and regulatory services, said: “We are not aware of any complaints about this issue and would ask residents to contact us with more information.”

“Once the A49 link road has been built it will take commuter traffic off Poolstock and significantly reduce congestion for residents living in the area.”
