Social worker and May 2019 Labour candidate for Bryn Danny Fletcher organised a small army of volunteers to defy the wintry weather and clear a dozen bags of rubbish and large items on a Sunday morning.

Locations tackled included the backs of properties on Wigan Road.

Mr Fletcher organised the event after being contacted by residents concerned about the amount of littering going on.

Rather than calling in the authorities at a time of budget cuts and with the famous Deal in mind, he decided to tackle the problem himself with the help of some equally civic-minded Bryn residents.

He said: “I am delighted with the success of the litter pick.

“The community has come together despite the inclement weather and the area is looking much better.

“I have already had numerous residents contact me to say thanks and comment on how much better the area looks.

“I plan to continue to arrange litter picks over the coming months and I will let residents know where and when.

The litter pick was one of a series that Danny has organised, with previous events including helping to clear waste off Bryn Rec after travellers left back in July.

Also donning his gloves and hi-vis jacket and grabbing his litter picker was current Bryn ward representative Coun Nathan Murray whom Mr Murray hopes to replace when the former steps down.

He said: “I was more than happy to support Danny on this litter pick. He is passionate about cleaning up areas plagued with litter and I know local residents are very grateful he has helped clean this area. I would like to thank all those who gave up their Sunday morning to attend.”
