MORE Wigan shoppers are taking to the internet to make their festive purchases, compared with the rest of the North West.

Research from Royal Mail during November shows that Wiganers were shopping for more Christmas presents from the comfort of their own homes, making it the top spot in the North West and eighth in the rest of the country.

The findings are based on analysis of more than 4m deliveries made by Royal Mail Tracked in November, which follows the progress of online orders from collection through to the delivery.

The study comes as new research also reveals that one third of UK online retailers have invested in Apps and other IT upgrades to make it easier for people to buy from them through their Smartphones this Christmas.

As a result of more people buying items online, Royal Mail has opened 10 temporary parcel sort centres as part of its festive operation, with the nearest one being in

These have been set up to sort a significant proportion of the parcels Royal Mail handles before they are distributed around the UK and delivered to the door by Royal Mail’s postmen and women.

Postal staff at Wigan’s Royal Mail sorting office, in Hallgate, are already experiencing sack-loads of parcels and are expecting it to get even busier in the run up to Christmas,

Nick Landon, Royal Mail’s managing director of fulfilment, said: “Online shopping is now such a key part of the Christmas shopping experience.

“To help our customers at this very important time of year, Royal Mail has invested in ten temporary parcel sort centres, which will increase our scale and flexibility, and enable us handle the increased volume as effectively as possible,

“We encourage people to post their Christmas cards and order their presents online early to help us spread the workload during the busy festive period.

“We also encourage customers to use postcode when sending their cards, letters and parcels.

“Customers can check postcodes for free at www.royalmail.com/postcode-finder.”

The latest recommended posting dates for UK Christmas delivery are: First Class - Friday December 20; second Class - Wednesday December 18 and Special Delivery Guaranteed – Monday December 23.
