Police, paramedics and fire crews from Wigan and Hindley were called to Thicknesse Avenue in Beech Hill shortly after 1pm today, Sunday February 28. A team from Electricity North West also attended the incident.

On arrival, they found a blaze had broken out inside a mid-terraced property. An adult male, who was the only occupant of the address, was rescued by the fire service from a first floor window, who then used breathing apparatus and a hose reel to extinguish the fire.

The fire service's early investigations have deduced that the fire was caused by faulty electrical cables.

A Wigan crew member urged the public to make sure that all electrical cables are undamaged and safe to use, as well as ensuring that all smoke detectors are working properly.
