Dozens of people gathered at the war memorial outside the parish church for the vigil.

A minute’s silence was observed before the church bell tolled 22 times, once for each of the victims.

The Rector of Wigan, Rev Bill Matthews, led the assembled crowd in prayer and gave a blessing.

Pink balloons, the same colour as the ones used in US pop star Ariana Grande’s concert, were then released.

As a final memorial act a single sky lantern was launched high into the air above Wigan.

The event was organised by Glenn Daly and Nathan Ryding and publicised on social media.

A memorial vigil was also held outside Leigh Town Hall on Tuesday evening, with junior sports teams among those taking part.

The parish church also opened a book of condolence and Wiganers lined up to add their messages of solidarity.
