Civic leaders and local MPs were among the dignitaries who watched the now annual Armed Forces Day parade.

There was a deal of military hardware on display plus a high-tech simulation dome recreating the sights and sounds of the First World War so visitors inside found themselves in a virtual reality trench, allowing them to understand something of the appalling conditions soldiers faced between 1914 and 1918

The day began with the parade, featuring both past and present members of the armed forces from Crompton Street to Wigan Parish Church.
