The operator says a number of its staff "made themselves unavailable for work" forcing them to run an amended timetable on a series of routes across the North West.

It includes the cancellation of 29 services - 50 per cent - due to run between Wigan North Western and Liverpool.

Council leader Coun David Molyneux blasted Northern for the latest cancellations.

He said: "I'm totally at my wits' end with Northern. The service they are providing for the people is absolutely useless. I know that the Mayor has written to the Minister For Transport about this situation but quite honestly we are dealing with a very, very poor service. It is not fit for purpose.

"It's completely inexcusable now. It's gone on far too long and people are at their wits' end with the service. They can't plan anything because they don't know what they are getting."
