Woman, 20, dies after being hit by two taxis

A 20-YEAR-OLD man is in police custody for suspected assault after the death of a female pedestrian in a road collision.

Emergency services were called to Ormskirk Road in Pemberton near to the former Carnegie Library building at 12.45am this morning (Sunday, July 20), after reports of a collision between a pedestrian and two taxis.

They found the 20-year-old woman, who is believed to live locally, trapped underneath a black Skoda Octavia Taxi.

Firefighters rescued her from underneath the car and she was taken to hospital where she sadly died a few hours later.

Initial enquiries have established that shortly before the collision there had been an altercation between the woman and a 20-year-old man.

She found herself in the road and was hit by two cars, both of which were taxis. Ormskirk Road is likely to remain closed at this point for most of today.

The 20-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of 47 assault and remains in police custody for questioning.

Detective Inspector Paul Rollinson from Wigan division, said: “Our thoughts and sympathies are with this young woman’s family and friends at this tragic time while they come to terms with their loss.

“We are trying to establish the circumstances leading up to the incident and are appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision or has any information about what happened before, to call us with any information.”
