POLICE have spoken of their disgust after a bogus tree surgeon snatched money from a 91-year-old Wigan pensioner.
They today appealed for information about Wednesday morning’s crime and issued a warning to the elderly to beware of cold callers.
The stranger arrived at the woman’s home in Milford Road, Whelley, at about 10.30am and was asked whether she needed any work completing in the garden.
The victim said no but the offender continued to put pressure on her before agreeing a price.
Eventually she gave in and handed over £80 in cash.
But instead of beginning work, the man then drove off in a white flat-bed van with black writing on it and never returned.
Sgt Adam Wall from Wigan Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “This man clearly targeted his victim as he was elderly and vulnerable and obviously has no shame or morals.
“The offender is described as being well dressed and I would ask anyone who may have been approached or fallen victim to this man to contact police as soon as possible.”
Anyone with information should phone police on 101 or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously, on 0800 555111.
