A WOMAN was racially abused and another hit over the head during an incident which brought a Wigan bus to a standstill.
Police were called to Orrell Road, Orrell, on Monday teatime after a disturbance broke out on the double-decker. Trouble flared when a man sitting behind an Asian woman on the 352 service who was having a mobile phone conversation in her native tongue made an offensive comment about her.
A 50-year-old female passenger, who had been sitting behind the man, was so shocked and upset that she went and sat with the Asian woman as a show of support and solidarity. This prompted the man to make further offensive remarks of a racial nature and he slapped the 50-year-old across the back of the head.
The bus driver brought the bus to a halt outside the Fishergate Inn.
A force spokesman said that officers arrived soon after the 5.15pm call and that a 42-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of racially-aggravated assault.
Officers questioned the parties and issued a caution to the man.
