A NOTORIOUS young thug who once broke a great-grandmother’s leg is on the run from police.

Teenager Stefan Cunliffe is wanted for breaching the terms of his release from prison on licence after serving a sentence for theft.

The 19-year-old was jailed for two acts of shoplifting at Wigan’s Grand Arcade and Primark store because at the time the crimes were committed he was already on bail for the savage attack on Christine Dagnall.

The victim suffered a fractured hip after Cunliffe attacked her in the street in October 2012. Mrs Dagnall had been visiting a bereaved relative when Cunliffe arrived at a neighbouring address and, according to Liverpool Crown Court, was drunk, loud, boorish and having a very public argument with his sister on her doorstep.

Mrs Dagnall went to tell him off and he pushed her over, causing the serious injury. The victim would later suffer several very painful medical complications.

Cunliffe, then of Kendal Road, Ince, received an 18-month sentence after admitting he caused her grievous bodily harm.

He had previous convictions including common assault and possessing a blade.

After the hearing Mrs Dagnall said: “Yes I did get in his face when he came over screaming and yelling at his sister but there was no call for an 18-year-old to push a 63-year-old to the ground.”

Cunliffe’s defence barrister at the time said: “While it is right he was behaving in an unpleasant and anti-social way he did not intend to cause the injuries that were sustained.”

The shopliftings took place in February last year, a month before he was due to appear at Liverpool on the assault charge and while he was remanded on bail.

He was released from prison on licence last month but has since breached the terms and is now wanted on recall.

He has links to the Leigh, Platt Bridge and Wigan areas.

Anyone who has seen him or knows of his current whereabouts is asked to call police on 0161 856 7221.
