The 20-year-old - who is a full USA international - spent last term on loan at Bolton, who wanted to keep him for a further 12 months.

However, Latics won the race for his signature, and the man himself can’t wait to get going.

“I’m really pleased to be here,” he said. “I feel like it was the best move for me at this time and I’m really looking forward to getting going.

“I’ve been at Everton all my life through the academy, and I’ve recently signed a new contract there as well.

“But I still need a bit more experience, so when Wigan were interested I jumped at the chance to come.

“I’d like to think I’m an attacking left back, and I really don’t think many people will get past me in one v one situations as I’m quite quick.

“But going forward I think I can contribute a lot of assists.”

He also believes his experience in the Championship with Bolton will stand him in good stead.

“It’s a really tough division and it was hard to get used to it at first,” he added.

“It’s a lot more physical than Under-23s football and the pace of the game is a lot quicker and more competitive.

“Once you get used to it you start to realise what the players are like and I found it really enjoyable to play in.”

He is also prepared to be thrown in at the deep end with Latics struggling for defensive cover.

“Pre-season went really well and I got a few games under my belt so I feel fit and raring to go for the weekend,” he revealed.

“The manager here seems really good and he’s told me I’ve got a lot of licence to bomb on and that we’re a footballing team.

“He’s got really high expectations of the group and he’s honest and good with everyone.

“I just feel like it’s a really good footballing club to come to.

“I learnt a lot playing Championship football last season, but Wigan will offer me even more to learn and add stuff to my game.”
