Appeal to help family of 'Mr Ashton Town'

Billy spent 63 of his eight-decades serving his beloved football club, initially as a player after joining aged 17, and then latterly, as a tireless volunteer behind the scenes.

He died at Ashton View care home last Tuesday, but didn’t have life insurance to his name.

And the club he dedicated most of his life to is trying to repay some of that service by easing the burden on his grieving family.

“Sadly Billy did not have life insurance,” said Town chairman Mark Hayes.

“And there is a shortfall for the funeral that we don’t want to burden the family with.

“We are putting an appeal out to recognise his 63 years of service with a donation, even if it’s just the cost of a drink, to toast Billy.

“He was known to many in the game and – bar referees and linesmen! – I am sure they would want to pay their respects to ‘Mr Ashton Town’.

“Billy could be heard every game, and I think he saw it as part of his game to keep them on their toes!

“His voice was heard for 63 years so it will be missed.”

The appeal is already almost halfway to its £2,000 target, ahead of the funeral tomorrow.

But the club would like to hit the target in advance to ensure the family have nothing extra to worry about.

Town have also announced details of their own plan to honour Billy’s memory – while staying inside current social distancing guidelines.

Hayes added: “Unfortunately the way the world is, only 10 people can be at the funeral, with no mourners allowed outside.

“So we are asking anyone who wishes to pay their respects to meet at Ashton Town (WN4 8SL) at 12noon on Wednesday to see Billy leave his beloved club for one last time.

“If we could line up down Edge Green Street, it would mean a lot to the family and, I am sure, Billy too.

“All while practicing social distancing of course.”
