The 19-year-old winger joined Latics during the January transfer window with big things expected of him.

But his 14-minute run-out in the FA Cup fourth-round tie at Manchester United just days after his arrival was his only sighting in the first team because of injury.

“Marcus has gone back to West Ham,” Barrow revealed.

“He’s struggled with injuries since he’s been here - he’s never really been physically right.

“It’s a sad one, because he is a lad who could have been handy in this situation, but he can travel well with the ball.

“He looked really bright when he first came in, but I just think certain players can be put off by certain things.

“There was almost too many players here, and that’s when it becomes a bigger challenge, when you can’t see a way in.

“It’s how you respond to that – and I’m not saying that was the case with Marcus, because he had his injuries.”

“But that doesn’t make it any easier for a young player to come in.”
