The Wigan Athletic manager arrived at Christopher Park yesterday to an office filled with balloons and banners, to mark his 34th birthday.

But other than sharing a cake with colleagues to mark the occasion, his focus did not deviate away from Saturday’s trip to Doncaster – and keeping Latics on the promotion trail.

“It was business as usual,” Caldwell told the Evening Post. “I came in to balloons and banners in the morning, and it’s great the staff have done that for everyone’s birthday this year.

“We’ve all had cake and I think it’s a nice touch. But having said that it’s just another day, and the older you get, the more your birthday becomes a pain rather than something special.

“We’re at the stage of the season now where you’re narrowing down the focus to each game, and every day becomes more important. In recent weeks we’ve had that focus in training and in games, and it’s shown in the results.

“We’ll be doing all we can to keep that going, carrying on at Doncaster.”

Caldwell even spent last night watching football, although it wasn’t to keep tabs on Walsall’s clash with Gillingham in a vital game at the top of League One.

“It doesn’t bother me at all what the other teams are doing,” added Caldwell.

“It’s been like that all season, and it really shouldn’t matter what other clubs are doing. We have to make sure we’re getting ourselves right, and doing the right things ourselves, and we’ve done that.

“It’s got us into a good position, and we have to carry that on to get over the line.

“I’ll be watching Manchester City-PSG, taking that in, and hopefully City can get through for British football.”
