Callum Elder keen to stay on at Wigan Athletic

Callum Elder has made the Latics left-back position his own in the second half of the campaign

The 23-year-old Australian has enjoyed a dream campaign on loan from Premier League Leicester, cementing the left-back spot since the turn of the year.

Having helped Latics win promotion from League One in style, the question of extending his deal – and proving himself in the Championship – has arisen.

And while keen to see how the land lies with his parent club, Elder admits the idea of remaining with Latics is an enticing one.

“My year here could not have gone any better,” Elder told the Wigan Post.

“To get promoted to the Championship, and get through to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup – at the age of 23 – has been amazing.

“I can’t thank the club enough for taking me on board, and for the fans for taking me in as well.

“And I’d like to think my performances have helped to repay the faith shown in my by the management.

“To join a dressing-room full of such quality – it’s a Championship squad in there if you look at it – has been great for me.

“The management staff have built a real foundation for the future, and I’m sure the club will go far in the years to come.”

With a year to go on his Leicester deal, Elder anknowledges it’s a crossroads in his career.

“It’s hard to say where I’ll be next season,” he admitted.

“I’ve obviously got one more year on my deal at Leicester, and we’ll see what happens there.

“All I can say is I’ve enjoyed my time here so much, it’s been an amazing 12 months and I’ll never forget it.”

The battle at left-back between Elder and Reece James has been perhaps the most keenly-contested for any jersey in the starting XI.

And there’s been a certain player back at Leicester watching developments with added interest!

“I actually know Reece’s brother Matty very well from my time at Leicester, and Reece has been great since I’ve been here, “ added Elder.

“We’ve had a great relationship throughout the year, it’s been a friendly rivalry.

“I supported him when he was in the team, and he’s been just as supportive while I’ve been playing.

“I’d like to think both of our performances have pushed each other on to bigger and better things.

“Whoever’s been in the side, we’ve had to play well, to the best of our ability, to hold on to the shirt.”
