Cook favourite for Latics job

The Portsmouth boss has been linked with the vacant role for several weeks, but has now emerged as the clear favourite.

Bookmakers have slashed the odds of Cook making the move to the DW Stadium.

He is a slender 1/10 with Skybet, ahead of Nathan Jones (7/1), Steve McClaren (10/1) and Uwe Rosler (12/1).

Cook guided Pompey the League Two title last season, having previously been in charge at Chesterfield.

Latics chairman David Sharpe is looking for his his third permanent manager in 12 months, after sacking Gary Caldwell and his replacement Warren Joyce during a disastrous Championship campaign.

Graham Barrow took temporary charge for the closing stages of the season, which ended with relegation back to League One.

Cook started his playing career at Wigan Athletic in 1984 before moving on four years later, but returned to the club for a loan spell in 2001-02.
