Cook gives Wigan Athletic stars a deserved break

Paul Cook has prescribed a programme of rest and recuperation ahead of Saturday's trip to Fleetwood that could secure Wigan Athletic's promotion back to the Championship.

The 1-0 win over Oxford in midweek means a Latics victory on the Fylde coast – coupled with a failure by third-placed Shrewsbury to beat Bury – would secure a top-two spot with three games to spare.

And after a hectic schedule in recent weeks – the Fleetwood game is Wigan’s sixth of EIGHT fixtures in April – Cook has ordered his players to take it easy in the lead-up to the weekend.

“Some of the lads have been showing a lot of fatigue in the last few games, and they’ve needed a break,” Cook told the Wigan Post.

“These lads have just been outstanding for me...Max Power, Sam Morsy, Dan Burn, Chey Dunkley...the spine of the side, they keep going to the well.

“They’ve all had a couple of days off since Tuesday, very well deserved as well, to recharge their batteries.

“We won’t be doing too much in the lead-up to Fleetwood, that’s for sure.”

Nick Powell (thigh) and Nathan Byrne (hamstring) are hoping to return for the trip to Highbury.
