Saturday’s 4-1 victory over Southend all-but secured Wigan’s place back in the Championship at the first attempt.

And they can secure the League One title as early as this weekend when they travel to the coast to face a Blackpool side fighting for their lives against the drop.

“I’ve told the players for months that they are the best team in this league,” Caldwell revealed.

“But they have to prove that by finishing first.

“I’ve told them they can enjoy it when they’ve finished first.”

Midfielder Chris McCann is one of the few survivors from last year’s squad that, having been the pre-season favourites for promotion back to the Premier League, somehow ended up falling through the trap door.

He admits picking up silverware would go a long way towards exorcising the demons of a car-crash campaign – and reward the class of 2016 for their collective efforts this term.

“It’s no good getting this far and not winning the title,” McCann acknowledged.

“We don’t want to be finishing second, we want to win the league.

“Hopefully we can go to Blackpool and do that.

“It’ll be nice, it’s a local derby, and we want to get the win that will give us the league title.”
