Fleetwood boss: We could have beaten Wigan Athletic

Fleetwood boss Simon Wiles believes with a more 'ruthless' edge in front of goal Fleetwood could have got all three points at Wigan Athletic.

In a relatively uneventful game with little goalmouth action, Wigan dominated without possessing the quality in the final third to hammer home their superiority.

And Fleetwood were thankful for their point which ended a run of three defeats on the spin.

“I’m pleased we’re up and running," said Wiles. "In the previous two games, we've played well and not got anything out of them.

"So the fact we've come away with a clean sheet and a point I think puts us in a good position and we've laid some foundations going forward.

“I thought we showed a lot of grit and determination, and it’s another side of our game which we have been speaking about, so we can be difficult to beat which has been the key message this week in training.”

Fleetwood's two chances both fell to Paddy Madden, but the striker could only head over the top before firing straight at Jamie Jones.

And Wiles was to left to reflect on two extra points that possibly went begging.

"There's always those thoughts when you create some good chances," Wiles added.

“It gets frustrating when we have chances, we still have the same message that we have to be ruthless in front of goal and making sure we take one of them, and we do feel when we do get that first goal, we can definitely build on it," mused Wiles.

“The biggest concern for me is that if we aren’t creating chances.

"We created so many chances in the previous few games and we created so many chances here again.

"I’m still confident of the players we can put them away and start to win games home and away.”
