FT Ipswich Town 2 Wigan Athletic 0

Wigan Athletic kicked-off their League One campaign with a 2-0 defeat at Ipswich - although the performance was far more positive than the scoreline would suggest.

With five players in the starting XI making their league debuts - and another couple off the bench - it was always going to be a tough day at the office for Latics, with John Sheridan in charge for the first time.

But if right-back Emeka Obi had done better with two free headers right in front of goal in the opening 15 minutes, it might have been a different story.

In between, Teddy Bishop headed the Tractor Boys in front with a fortuitous chance, with the midfielder also seeing another strike brilliantly tipped on to the post by Jamie Jones.

Jones also arguably had covered an Aaron Drinan header that touched the crossbar on the way over.

But it was far from one-way traffic, with Joe Garner deserving far better than to see a bicycle kick come back off the bar with the Town goalkeeper well beaten.

Jones made another fine save to deny Freddie Sears before substitute Gwion Edwards doubled the advantage with 10 minutes to go.

And Latics were indebted to Jones for pulling off another superb stop in the dying stages to deny Edwards a second and Ipswich a third.
