Gilks: One aim for Latics next term

Matt Gilks admits anything other than an immediate return to the Championship for Wigan Athletic is unthinkable as far as next season is concerned.

Gilks only joined Latics midway through the campaign, from Rangers on an 18-month deal, but was unable to prevent the side suffering a second relegation in the space of three seasons.

However, the veteran custodian, who turns 35 next week, says he’s no intention of making his stay in League One any longer than it needs to be.

“There’s no other thoughts on anything other than promotion next year, as far as I’m concerned,” Gilks said.

“We’re already geared towards achieving that, even now over the summer.

“Obviously people will come and go, and it’s making sure you’re bringing in the right people to get this club back where it should be.”

The end of the season came at the wrong time for Gilks, who had made the No.1 jersey his own after a battle with on-loan Stoke stopper Jakob Haugaard.

“It’s a weird feeling, because normally at this stage of the season I’m a little bit sore,” he acknowledged.

“This year it’s been a bit different, I’ve just started playing again after a couple of years out, and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it.

“I have two weeks off every summer, complete rest, and then I start back in the gym, weights and cardio at first.

“I go to the gym with an old mate, he puts me through my paces - and I also pay for the privilege!

“I’m a glutton for punishment, but that’s what’s needed when you’re a footballer.

“It’s reaction work as well as general fitness work...it’s certainly not for the faint-hearted.
