Grigg KO hammer blow for Wigan Athletic

Paul Cook's worst international break fears may have been realised with Wigan Athletic star Will Grigg picking up a hamstring injury playing for Northern Ireland in Austria on Friday night.

The striker was only sent on as a substitute with 11 minutes remaining, but still found time to hit the bar with his side’s best chance in the 1-0 defeat, before pulling up lame in the closing stages.

He manfully struggled through to the end but has already returned to Wigan for assessment and treatment, ruling him out of Monday night’s trip to Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Cook will be keeping his fingers crossed there is no long-term problem, with Grigg only having returned to the starting line-up last weekend at Preston after recovering from a previous groin injury.

James Vaughan has also been out through injury, although he’s now back to full fitness, with Joe Garner the only other recognised striker at the club ahead of a crucial spell in the lead-up to the festive season.
