How Twitter reacted: Wigan Athletic fans' pride in FA Cup run

A return to Wembley for the fifth time in six years was at stake and as the game ramped-up to half-time nerves were impossible to control.

For the fourth time in this FA Cup campaign Wigan were on the front foot against Premier League opposition.

But sport can be cruel, and goals from Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Cedric Soares ensured the scoreboard didn’t reflect the heroics of Latics keeper Christian Walton, who saved a second-half penalty from Manolo Gabbiadini.

Of course the odds were stacked against the League One promotion hopefuls, but that didn’t dilute any disappointment in the result.

But Twitter painted a picture of pride - and judging by how people have reacted, Paul Cook’s players can hold their heads high.
