A return to Wembley for the fifth time in six years was at stake and as the game ramped-up to half-time nerves were impossible to control.

For the fourth time in this FA Cup campaign Wigan were on the front foot against Premier League opposition.

But sport can be cruel, and goals from Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Cedric Soares ensured the scoreboard didn’t reflect the heroics of Latics keeper Christian Walton, who saved a second-half penalty from Manolo Gabbiadini.

Of course the odds were stacked against the League One promotion hopefuls, but that didn’t dilute any disappointment in the result.

But Twitter painted a picture of pride - and judging by how people have reacted, Paul Cook’s players can hold their heads high.

Emma Taylor @ejtaylor16: It certainly hurts but my god I’m proud of @LaticsOfficial #wafc

Dave @oomidave1: Team tried hard, didnt take our chances when on top, lets go n smash the league now #wafc

DaveLePommy @Davepommywafc: Proud of the Tics to even get this far as a league 1 club and at the same time trying to achieve promotion. Up the Tics #wafc

Shane Nicholson @Shinner144: Wigan Athletic definitely value for money in the Fa cup.........

Greg Farrimond @GregFarrimond: Not disgraced ourselves at all. Superb in that first half in particular. Walton has been outstanding, get him on that plane to Russia!

Sean Evans @Seanevans04: No arguments but what a run that was! Still proving there’s something special at Wigan Athletic! Here’s to the title chase #wafc

Emma @EmmaThommo: They’ve done us proud haven’t they? Let’s kick on and smash this league now @LaticsOfficial #wafc

The Dude @Mightylatic: Lads played really well today but didn’t create enough chances from the 122 corners we had. For most of that match you wouldn’t be able to guess who was the Prem team. Onward to Wednesday. #WAFC

And a word from the captain...

Sam Morsy @sammorsy8: Phenomenal effort from the lads today wasn’t meant to be tho. Great support let’s take this into the leauge now 12 cup finals left.
