Wigan Athletic star Gary Roberts has revealed the temporary break in football due to Covid-19 has saved his campaign from being over.

The 36-year-old limped off in the 0-0 draw against Luton at the beginning of the month – which turned out to be the last game before the season was suspended.

Roberts has since discovered the severity of his hamstring injury, which was far worse than initially feared.

“It’s not a good one,” admitted the forward, who had recently won back his place in the Latics side.

“We got it scanned and, had the season carried on, my season was done.

“With all this coronavirus stuff, obviously the season’s been put back, it might even give me a chance to get back.

“I suppose if there is a positive to take, it’s that my season might not be over after all.”

Not that Roberts has been able to do much in the way of rehab at home.

“At the minute I’m not even able to run, because I’m at the beginning of a long-term injury,” he revealed.

“It’s so frustrating at the minute...I can’t run, I can’t even jog.

“It’s just keeping an eye on my diet and upper-body sessions to keep me ticking over.

“I’m climbing the walls at the moment, but I suppose everyone else is in the same boat.”

At least Roberts has been able to throw his new-found free time into other activities – not least looking after his two children, who are off school.

“It’s hard work!” he laughed. “I’ve got two girls, 11 and eight, and their mother is home-schooling them.

“And hats off to all the teachers out there, because it’s not easy!

“We’re trying to give them exercise as well, trying to keep them healthy.

“But the iPads have been a massive thing in our house, we’re plodding on, as everyone is.

“It’s the boredom more than anything, and trying to keep them entertained.”
