Jonathan Jackson admits he sees '˜similarities' between Wigan Athletic's Class of 2016 and the 2003 side that also won the League One title.

Gary Caldwell’s men didn’t quite manage to bring up three figures like Paul Jewell’s side did 13 years ago.

But chief executive Jackson hopes they will be able to emulate their efforts and hit the ground running next season in the Championship.

“I see similarities between both teams - and hopefully we’ll have the same momentum that team had,” Jackson told the Evening Post.

“That team was full of goals with (Nathan) Ellington and (Jason) Roberts, (Jimmy) Bullard in midfield, and experience at the back with (Jason) De Vos and (Matt) Jackson.

“We went up as champions, and we’re aiming to keep that momentum going.

“It won’t be easy, and we’re under no illusion the Championship will be anything other than a very difficult league.

“But now we know we’re there, we can start to think about it. We have been planning for it for the last six months, and we’re ready for the challenge.”
