It is understood Sheffield Wednesday are leading the race to sign the 26-year-old.

The Star, our sister title in south Yorkshire, reports the Owls want him on board ahead of Saturday's trip to Walsall.

Windall spent the second half of last season on loan at Hillsborough.

Wednesday are expected to pay a transfer fee of at least £500,000, which covers the outstanding amount Latics owe to his former club.

Windass joined from Rangers for £2.5m in 2018 and, while it is not unusual for clubs to pay transfers in instalments, clubs leaving administration must clear all of their football creditors' debts.

Preston North End had also been interested in Windass, who scored three times in nine appearances for the Owls last season, having bagged four times in 16 games for Latics.

Cedric Kipre is also expected to exit Latics this week.

Premier League outfit West Brom had edged ahead of Blackburn in the race to sign the 23-year-old.

Latics do not owe any outstanding fees on Kipre, meaning any transfer fee will go into their pot - to either reduce the non-football creditors' bill or administrators' fees, or be used to keep the club running.
