Latics have to continue giving it the Max '“ Power

Latics entertain the ‘other’ Latics on Valentine’s weekend hoping to extend their unbeaten sequence to 10 matches.

Power and his pals have lost just twice in the last 23 league games – half a season’s worth of games – which has seen them jump from mid-table to within a point of automatic promotion.

The 22-year-old says no-one at the DW Stadium is taking anything for granted as the campaign reaches a crucial stage.

And he highlighted a spectacular fall-from-grace during his Tranmere days as proof of the dangers of a team taking its collective eye off the ball.

“During my Tranmere days, once we were top of the league in February and we eventually finished 12th,” he told the Evening Post.

“I’ve experienced life at both ends of the table, and I know how things can suddenly change, or click.

“We’re in a good position now, but we’re still chasing.

“Once we get in there, though, I think we’ll be there to stay.

“We’re all pulling in the right direction, and it’s just important we don’t get too ahead of ourselves now.”

Power has been a revelation at Wigan since his summer switch from Prenton Park.

Earlier this week he was voted the PFA Fans’ player of the month for January, having scored his fourth and fifth goals of the season from the engine room.

His first goal for Latics came at Oldham in the corresponding fixture back in September, a wonderful strike from outside the area that flew into the net.

And he’s hoping to replicate that in the return clash this weekend against an opposition he enjoys facing.

“I’ve always seemed to score goals against Oldham,” he acknowledged.

“Hopefully I can get one next week as well and we can go on and get the three points.”

Power is walking a disciplinary tightrope at the moment, with a run of five bookings in the space of six games leaving him just one more away from a two-game ban.

“I’m on nine bookings, and I’m treading very carefully at the moment to avoid getting a suspension,” he added.

“Obviously if there’s a tackle, I’ll have to go in for it. But it’s there in the back of my mind, because I know there are players waiting to take my place.”
