The 31-year-old has been linked with Latics for much of the summer as boss Gary Caldwell looks to bolster his squad ahead of the return to the Championship.

Buxton was left out of the Derby side for the 2-0 friendly victory over Walsall at the weekend, sparking speculation that a deal might be imminent.

And Rams assistant manager Chris Powell admitted after the game that the player was ‘considering his options’ after ‘contact from another club’.

Buxton has played over 150 times for the Rams since joining from Burton seven years ago, although his three league appearances last term were all off the bench.

He would link up again with former Derby defensive colleague Stephen Warnock, who joined Latics at the beginning of the year, initially on loan, before a permanent deal this summer.

Latics have already brought in centre-back Dan Burn from Fulham this summer, and the impending arrival of Buxton has led to renewed speculation concerning vice-captain Jason Pearce.

The 28-year-old has been an important cog in the Latics backline since his arrival from Leeds in January last year.

But sources in London suggest League One outfit Charlton are lining up a move, which could appeal to the player who hails from nearby Hillingdon.
