Latics swoop for Warnock

Wigan Athletic have signed ex-Liverpool and England left-back Stephen Warnock on loan from Derby until the end of the season.

The 34-year-old started the season in the Derby line-up under Paul Clement, but found himself out of favour at the iPro Stadium following the arrival of Darren Wassall last month.

With Reece James currently out injured - and Chris McCann facing a two-match ban after reaching 10 bookings for the season - Latics boss Gary Caldwell has moved swiftly to bring in reinforcements.

“When we found out Stephen was available it really was a no-brainer,” said Caldwell.

“He has vast experience having played extensively at the very top level.

“But he also has great Football League experience in recent years, and I think he will really help the squad at a vital time of the season.

“We are struggling a little on the left side of defence, with Chris McCann is suspended for two games and we don’t know the time scale on Reece James yet.

“The opportunity to bring in a player with his quality and experience is a great signing for the rest of season.”

Warnock started his career at Liverpool, where he won winners medals in the FA Cup and the Champions League before moving on to Blackburn, Aston Villa, Leeds, Bolton, Bradford and Coventry.

He was also named in the England squad for the 2010 World Cup ahead of ex-Latics man Leighton Baines, although he did not feature in any games.

Warnock will wear the No.22 shirt for Latics.
