GARY Caldwell reckons Wigan Athletic’s upturn in fortunes is based on the age-old cliche that attack is the best form of defence.
Latics got their campaign up and running on Wednesday with a 3-0 demolition of Scunthorpe at the DW.
When you keep the ball as much as we did, you don’t have to defend an awful lotGary Caldwell
It was their second successive shut-out following Sunday’s stalemate against Doncaster. But this time, with the addition of Craig Davies in the starting XI, Latics added a cutting edge to their play.
And Caldwell acknowledges that the more dominant Latics are in games, the less there is to worry about at the other end.
“When you keep the ball as much as we did, you don’t have to defend an awful lot,” he said. “I can’t remember too many corners or times where we were under the cosh.
“We controlled the ball so well that defending became less of an issue, and they didn’t have enough of the ball to hurt us.”
Midfielder Francisco Junior is expected to extend his loan from Everton in time to feature at Gillingham tomorrow.
