LATICS will go into the Championship play-offs on a negative note after losing by the odd goal in seven in a typical end-of-season encounter at Ewood.
Having made seven changes to the side that had clinched a play-off spot in midweek, Uwe Rosler saw his side struggle to stamp their authority on the game.
They fell behind as early as the 12th minute, when Tom Cairney danced round four would-be tacklers and slid the ball past Scott Carson.
Latics equalised four minutes later when Nicky Maynard’s header looked to have gone in off the bar before Ivan Ramis made absolutely sure.
But the home side regained their advantage within a minute when Craig Conway fed Rudy Gestede, who made no mistake.
After Jordan Rhodes was denied by first the offside then a brilliant save by Carson, Rovers did find a third goal through Gestede.
James McClean, who had been having a running battle with Rovers defender Grant Hanley throughout, made it 3-2 on the hour mark with a tidy finish.
Rovers added a fourth with six minutes to go when Rhodes nodded home Craig Conway’s excellent delivery.
But Nicky Maynard ensured a nervy climax when he drove forward and steered a nice shot into the bottom corner on 87 minutes.
Latics will now face QPR in the play-offs for a place in the Wembley final, with the first leg at the DW this Friday (7.45pm).
