WIGAN Athletic lost their first FA Cup tie in normal time for three years as they bowed out at the first hurdle against local rivals Bolton.
The home side repeated their emphatic Championship victory of a couple of months ago - but this one was a far more even affair.
Ali Al Habsi - making only his second start of the season - made a string of fine saves to keep Latics in the game during a rather one-sided first half.
But after the break Latics came into the game and had good chances to take the lead.
The best fell to Adam Forshaw, who saw his powerful header from close range magnificently saved by Wanderers goalkeeper Adam Bogdan at the start of the second half.
Chris McCann saw another header flash just past the post, before Bolton scored the only goal with 15 minutes remaining.
Young star Zach Clough latched on to a nice through ball, and lifted the ball expertly over Al Habsi into the back of the net.
Latics had a late chance to force a replay, but Shaun Maloney’s free-kick - bound for the top corner - was tipped over the top by Bogdan at full stretch.
Boss Malky Mackay confirmed after the game Maloney has been the subject of interest from ‘four or five clubs’, with one bid having been rejected.
Mackay also confirmed striker Oriol Riera is in ‘advanced talks’ with Spanish outfit Deportivo La Coruna regarding a loan move.
