WIGAN Athletic hope to unveil their new manager by the weekend – with even the bookies in the dark as to the identity of the mystery man.

At one point yesterday, there were SIX joint-favourites to succeed Roberto Martinez – with Owen Coyle, Karl Robinson, Rene Meulensteen, Mike Phelan, Steve McClaren and Gus Poyet all rated at 6/1.

Latics are halfway through the interview process, with chairman Dave Whelan running the rule over ‘14-16’ candidates before whittling it down to his special one.

Time is certainly of the essence, with the bulk of the Wigan squad – minus those who have been on international duty of late – due to report back for pre-season training in just three weeks’ time.
