YANIC Wildschut is in the perfect place to continue his football education, reckons Wigan Athletic chief Gary Caldwell.
The Dutch winger is on a three-month loan from Middlesbrough, and has hit the ground running with a series of sparkling performances and important goals.
After finding himself on the outside looking in for much of his time on Teesside, Wildschut has found a new lease of life at the DW.
“Yanic will tell you he is enjoying his football here,” Caldwell recognised.
“He is someone who’s not played a lot of football recently, but he’s come in to a club that’s shown him a lot of love.
“We’ve shown him he’s valued here, and he’s someone who can get success here.
“He’s getting games in English football, he’s getting to understand English football.
“The fans love him, the players love him, the staff love him, and he’s enjoying that.
“When you’re enjoying that, you usually produce your best stuff.
“He’s also helped to free up some space for Michael (Jacobs), Will (Grigg), Max Power’s scored a few goals.
“When you have a player like Yanic, defenders get attracted to that, and it creates space for other players.
“We’re still getting used to having him in the team, and I think we can still improve with him in the team and use him better.
“While we’re playing well, we know we’ve a long way to go and we can still improve.”
Caldwell also admitted he would be looking into the possibility of extending Wildschut’s loan beyond the initial three months.
“It’s a question for him as to whether he’d like to extend his time here,” he added.
“We obviously would like to keep him, as he’s playing very well.
“We’ve given him a role that he enjoys, that he feels comfortable with, which allows him to show his attacking play.
“I’m sure it’s something that both parties would like to get done.”
