WIGAN Athletic fans and legends are set to come together to honour current player Juan Carlos Garcia, who is battling Leukaemia.
A special match between the two has been organised at Ashton Town’s ground on July 31, kicking off at 7.30pm.
Stars from the past including Neill Rimmer, David Lowe and Jason Jarrett have all confirmed with all proceeds on the day going towards Leukaemia Care.
It’s been organised by a group of Latics fans who were touched by the plight of the Honduran defender and wanted to show their support.
One of those supporters is Matt Walker who has been putting the pieces together for the event since February.
He said: “We’re hoping to confirm a number of other legends as we get closer to the event but it should be a great night. We’ll have lots going on with raffles, competitions and some really good prizes.
“We’re hoping to have around 1,000 people there on the night with representatives from the charity present too with bucket collections.
“It came about when me and another supporter, Jay Whittle, got together and decided we wanted to do something to show our support. Hopefully we can raise a lot of money on the night for such a worthy cause.”
Ashton Town recently hosted a similar match for Joseph’s Goal and chairman Mark Hayes is hoping for another successful event.
He said: “The club is made up to be hosting another legends game, it’s another opportunity to help raise money for a great cause, whilst also watching players I used to pay to watch some years ago.
“The lads have worked tirelessly to organise the teams and I can’t wait as it’s sure to be a great night.”
Garcia was diagnosed with Leukaemia earlier this year and has since received treatment at the Christie hospital in Manchester.
The 27-year-old signed for Latics in 2013, making his debut at Manchester City in the League Cup later that year.
Tickets for the game are priced at £2 with children free. Supporters can pay on the day, however, anyone wanting to attend is advised to purchase in advance by calling Matt on 07599 801692 or Danny on 07917 541674.
