Christian values just perfect for Wigan Athletic's title push

Despite already having picked up 90 points with four games to go, Latics require five more points to mathematically get themselves a top-two spot, such has been the incredible efforts from rivals Blackburn and Shrewsbury.

But Walton says the side are determined to power through until the last game, rather than doing just enough to get themselves home.

“At the start of the season, we set out to be champions of League One – and we’re on track to do that,” he told the Wigan Post.

“You obviously can’t win every game in this league.

“But the way we’ve been keeping going is tremendous, a real credit to all the lads.

“Even when you’re not playing well, you can always dig in and make sure you keep a clean sheet.

“And that’s what we’ve been able to do on a number of occasions this season.

“If you can’t win a game, you have to make sure you don’t lose it, and that’s been a big part of our success so far.”

Tomorrow’s trip to Fleetwood will be Wigan’s sixth fixture of April – with another couple to fit in before the end of the month.

For Walton and his colleagues, it’s been a tough ask to hold their consistency with hardly time to draw breath between games.

“It’s been Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday for a few weeks now,” he acknowledged.

“And I don’t think some people understand exactly how difficult it is to keep raising yourself for a game every few days.

“The way we play, the work-rate we put it in, takes it out of the outfield lads.

“Obviously as a goalkeeper I’m not physically doing as much running as the other lads.

“With a goalkeeper it’s more mentally tiring, and making sure you keep your concentration at all times.”

For Walton, it’s been a dream campaign at the DW on loan from Premier League Brighton.

And it’s an arrangement he wouldn’t be against extending should both clubs decide it was in his best interests.

“Yeah obviously another loan here would be nice,” added the 
22-year-old.

“Obviously I’ve got to see what happens on the summer back down at Brighton.

“But it’s something that would definitely be high on my list, to get back up here to Wigan.

“It will obviously depend a bit on whether Brighton manage to stay in the Premier League.

“But on a personal note, I want to keep on playing games, week in week out.

“That’s what I’m doing here, and I’ve been very happy here from day one.

“It’s a great club to be at, the lads have been brilliant.

“And I like to think I’ve repaid them with my performances.

“Looking back to the start of the year, and the teams who were in for me, we weighed up the options and this one was best.

“The squad they had in place, the manager coming in, the forward-thinking at the club...it always looked like they would be at the top of the league.

“And thankfully it’s proved that way.”
