WIGAN Athletic have signed former Bolton goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen.
The 40-year-old has been training with Latics since the weekend after leaving West Ham last season and, despite having received offers from Championship clubs, is keen to stay in the North West.
Latics looked to be on the verge of re-signing Chris Kirkland last week, but the deal fell through at the 11th hour.
Boss Gary Caldwell admitted last Friday a deal for Kirkland was “still on the table”, but Jaaskelainen’s arrival on a one-year deal could well have put that to bed.
Jaaskelainen, whose son is in the youth ranks at Bolton, played over 500 matches for the Wanderers in all competitions before making the switch to Upton Park, where he played 57 times in the league. He also has 59 caps for his country.
He becomes Wigan’s third goalkeeper, alongside Richard O’Donnell and Lee Nicholls.
Caldwell said: “Jussi has had a tremendous career and was consistently one of the top keepers in the Premier League.
“He is still in fantastic condition and as well as providing great competition in the squad, his experience will be invaluable on and off the park.”
