WIGAN Athletic have confirmed the signing of Torquay United goalkeeper Dan Lavercombe.
The 19-year impressed during a recent trial spell at the DW Stadium, and will complete the season with the Gulls before moving up to Wigan full-time in the summer.
“He’s a young goalie with huge potential,” admitted Latics boss Gary Caldwell.
“He won’t be coming here straight away.
“He’ll be staying down there and gaining more experience and playing games.
“But it’s a real signing for the future.”
Lavercombe had previously spent time on trial at north-west neighbours Bolton Wanders earlier this season.
Torquay boss Kevin Nicholson admitted at the time the Trotters had “first go at it if they want”, although Lavercombe had “attracted interest off one or two clubs”.
However, Latics have nipped in and clinched the signing of the talented teenager, who also spent time training with Liverpool last summer.
Lavercombe’s arrival bolsters a goalkeeping position at the DW Stadium that already includes Jussi Jaaskelainen, Rich O’Donnell and Lee Nicholls.
He joins for an undisclosed fee.
