ENGLAND’S referees’ chief has offered a grovelling apology to Wigan Athletic for the off-side howlers that could cost the club its place in the Premier League.
As the Latics prepare to face champions Manchester United hoping for a change of luck, they have received what is now the third official “sorry” for dodgy decisions this season.
Completion of this unwelcome hat-trick was made in the wake of Wigan’s controversial 2-1 defeat at Chelsea on Saturday after which assistant linesman Dave Bryan was almost universally slammed for allowing both off-side goals from the home team to stand.
The apology was issued by referees’ boss Mike Riley but it counted for little with manager Roberto Martinez today.
He said: “We don’t gain any retrospective joy or satisfaction from receiving apologies from match officials.”
