WIGAN Athletic’s attempts to record a second victory in three days was cruelly halted by torrential rain in South Yorkshire.

With Latics in almost total control at Hillsborough, referee Kevin Stroud abandoned the game on 59 minutes - meanning the game will have to be replayed in the New Year

James McClean had given Latics a fully-deserved half-time lead with his first goal for the club, a cool finish on 24 minutes.

Indeed, the only downside at the break was that Latics weren’t already out of sight such was their dominance across the park.

While they were head and shoulders above their opponents, unfortunately Latics couldn’t beat the increasingly-worsening weather.

Puddles had already been to appear on the playing surface during the interval, and a particularly heavy downpour moments after the restart exacerbated the problem.

Referee Stroud had a word with both managers, presumably to alert them to his fears about completing the game.

Then, just before the hour mark, both teams were led off the field to the relief of the home fans and immense frustration of the travelling contingent from Wigan.
