IN what has been a busy day for Gary Caldwell and his team, Latics announced no fewer than THREE new signings and managed to squeeze in a friendly for good measure.
The final deal was announced at 10.30pm last night as highly rated Manchester United youngster Reece James agreed a three-year-deal.
The 21-year-old left-back has been snapped-up on an undisclosed fee.
Earlier in the day, Latics confirmed the double loan capture of Everton’s Francisco Junior and Jonjoe Kenny.
Those two then played in last night’s 1-1 draw against Partick Thistle.
A number of clubs were understood to be chasing Bacup-born James, who spend time last season on loan with Rotherham United and Huddersfield Town. James was taken on Manchester United’s pre-season tour of America before last season, and after impressing in his first team debut against LA Galaxy, where he scored twice, was handed a place in the squad for the shock Capital One Cup defeat to MK Dons.
He has impressed in United’s reserves, previously being nominated for the Denzil Haroun Reserve Player of the Year award.
Caldwell, Latics manager said: “Reece is a young player with a bright future. He has been schooled by one of the best academies around and has impressed both at Under 21 level and whilst on loan.
“He is another who will strengthen competition on that left side, and has played as a full-back, or in a wing back role. Once again, there were clubs after him so we’re delighted to add him to the squad.”
