ROBERTO Martinez has admitted his ‘incredible sadness’ at learning of the death of former Wigan Athletic defender Steve Gohouri, at the age of 34.
Gohouri was found dead on the shores of the River Rhine in Krefeld, to the north-west of Dusseldorf, on December 31, three weeks after he went missing following a Christmas party at his current fourth division German side TSV Steinbach.
And Martinez, who signed the Ivory Coast international for Latics in January 2010, has added his tribute to a hugely-popular figure.
“It was a real shock, such a young man, an incredibly sad moment,” the Everton boss said.
“Steve arrived to the English game, he was a bubbly character, he always bought that smile into the training ground.
“A very tough defender on the pitch, but such a soft natured personality.
“It’s really, really sad to see what happened to him.
“All the thoughts go to his family and friends.”
