FA CUP-winning Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez has described outgoing Latics chairman Dave Whelan as an “incredible, driven man”.
Martinez, who left Wigan to join Everton, was one of the first signings under the ownership of Mr Whelan as a player in the 1990s before becoming the man who took Latics to their FA Cup triumph as manager in 2013.
He said: “It will be a shame for Mr Whelan not to be involved in football any more.
“He showed the football club the way forward. His legacy will carry on for a long, long time.
“I have seen at first-hand how an incredible, driven man has given so much to the town of Wigan.
