McArthur doesn’t fancy another relegation scrap

JAMES McArthur has called on Wigan Athletic to hit the ground running in the new season – to avoid the need for another ‘Great Escape’.

Latics ended last term in Champions League form, picking up seven wins from the last nine games to end the campaign in 15th spot.

That looked a forlorn hope at the beginning of March, with Latics propping up the rest and the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Newcastle and Liverpool to play.

But an inspired finishing burst – which coincided with McArthur coming back into the team – proved decisive.

And the Scotland international, who recently signed a contract extension at the DW, wants Latics to pick up where they left off when the action gets underway in August.

“We need to build on the momentum we finished last year and make sure we hit the ground running next season,” he told the Observer.

“It was an excellent finish to the campaign but the challenge now is to start well and make sure we don’t put ourselves in the position where we need to pull something like that out of the bag.”
